Washington DC, Feb. 27, 2009 -- Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama presented U.S. Department of Agriculture employees with a sapling from the Andrew Jackson Southern Magnolia, a tree planted at the White House by President Andrew Jackson in 1828. The new tree will be planted in a special demonstration garden overlooking the National Mall in Washington.

Offspring of the Andrew Jackson Southern Magnolia are also a part of AMERICAN FORESTS’ Historic Tree Program (www.historictrees.org), and are grown from seeds taken from the tree that stands on the White House grounds. First and second generation saplings from these seeds are available for purchase from AMERICAN FORESTS’ Historic Tree Program for educational programs, memorials or private use.

The White House magnolia was planted by President Jackson to honor his wife Rachel, who passed away just before he took office in 1829. The tree continues to grace the White House lawn next to the south portico and until recently was prominently featured on the back of our twenty-dollar bills.

The Andrew Jackson Southern Magnolia is one of the many trees in the AMERICAN FORESTS’ Historic Tree Program collection. The program is a way to focus peoples attention on our countrys future by planting trees connected to our history.
